After a 14-year successful teaching career in the suburbs of Chicago, Jim joined the audio industry to teach music educators how to use audio equipment successfully. Stuck away from home on a weekend in Houston, Texas, he noticed a clown standing in front of a magic store on a busy street. With lots of free time he decided to investigate. Thus began his magic career.

Soon, he was performing magic at weddings for cute flower girls and ring bearers; entertaining his students; and for over 10 years children with their shopping parents at department stores. His agent booked him at multiple country clubs and Missouri Athletic Club.

Banjo Jim the Magician blends his love of children with over 20 years as an educator, and 20+ years entertainment experience, across the country on his 1919 Vega banjo including Chicago's Rush Street Nightclubs.
